The BALANCED Project is conducting applied research on the benefits of the integrated PHE approach vs. single sector approaches. Results of this research will be key to increasing the number of donors supporting PHE, the number of project designs based on the PHE approach, and the number of practitioners implementing PHE in the field.

In 2009, in collaboration with PHE community of practice members World Wildlife Fund, Population Reference Bureau, and the Environmental Change and Security Program, the BALANCED Project designed a research protocol and questionnaires to explore the benefits of integrated approaches. Using this research design, in 2010 BALANCED staff collected data in 52 integrated PHE and non-integrated sites in the Philippines—interviewing over 2,000 individuals on numerous reproductive health/family planning and environmental variables—with the analyzed results informing an upcoming 2011 report outlining these benefits for PHE practitioners, policymakers and donors.
